Office Synchronizer Follow-up

In last months Tech Tip Mike explained the use of Trimble's Office Synchronizer. One item we did not detail was the use of the Office Synchronizer with Trimble Geomatics Office (TGO), specifically the import and export formats. While Trimble Business Center can utilize the .JOB file format TGO utilizes the .DC File Format. The conversion from the .JOB format (utilized within Survey Controller) to .DC format takes place in the Data Transfer Utility.

To accommodate the conversion a new Survey Device, the Survey Data Card, must be created and associated with the subfolder created for the specific data logger in Office Synchronizer. To create the device please review the following steps:

  • Install Office Synchronizer
  • Connect a data logger which allows the creation of the subfolder within the Office Synchronizer root directory
  • The subfolder will initially appear with the data logger serial number however you can change the name to the operator, unit number, etc.
  • Once the device subfolder is named and created open Trimble's Data Transfer Utility

This can be done two ways:
Open TGO and select Utilities/Data Transfer Utility or Select Windows Start/All Programs/Trimble Data Transfer/select Data Transfer

  • Once the Data Transfer Utility is open select Devices/New
  • Scroll down the device list to Survey Data Card/select Ok
  • Select Browse and browse to the device subfolder under the Office Synchronizer root directory (example C:\Trimble Synchronizer Data\TSC2 SS10A04963)
  • Once the device subfolder is highlighted select Ok/Next
  • Name the device you are creating/Finish
  • It is recommended to name the device as the subfolder is named
To import the Project (.Job file) into TGO (assuming the data collector files have been synchronized):
  • Open TGO and create a New Project
  • Select Import/Survey Devices (under the Survey Tab)
  • Select the Survey Data Card device just created/Open
  • All the project files will now appear
  • Select (highlight) the specific project or projects to import/select Open

To Export the Project (.DC file to .JOB file) into the data collector:

  • Select Export/select the Survey Tab/Survey Devices/Ok
  • Select the Survey Data Card device/Open
  • If required rename the file and for earlier versions of Survey Controller select the appropriate format
  • Select Save

The project is now sent to the device subfolder and will be uploaded when the data collector is next synchronized.

Convert to RINEX Utility

Trimble has two versions of the Convert to RINEX utility: v3.50 is included in Trimble Geomatics Office and v2.0.0.8 is a standalone program. v3.50 was last updated in 2005 and lacks many important features of v2.0.0.8, namely:
  • RINEX 3.0 conversion
  • GLONASS observations support
  • T02 file support (New file format of the R8GNSS Model 3 receivers)
  • Windows Vista compatibility

As v2.0.0.8 is continually being updated, I would recommend Trimble users switch to this version.

v2.0.0.8 can be downloaded at the following location:
