ESRI Course:    Introduction to ArcGIS I

Overview
ArcGIS Desktop is ESRI's full-featured GIS software for visualizing, creating, managing, and analyzing geographic data. This course provides the foundation for becoming a successful ArcGIS Desktop user. Overview
In this course, students extend their ArcGIS skills in the areas of cartography, data automation and editing, and geoprocessing and spatial analysis. Students work with advanced cartographic tools as they learn how to efficiently create effective maps. A major focus of the course is the geodatabase. Students learn database design considerations and techniques for creating, maintaining, and managing GIS data stored in a geodatabase. The ArcGIS geoprocessing tools for spatial analysis are also covered and, in a course project, students apply many of their newly acquired skills.

·         Spatial analysis and data management: Buffers; Spatial overlays; Extracting features for analysis; Analytical methods and tools.

·         Geocoding and display of locations from tabular data: Address geocoding; Display of points from x,y coordinates.

We will cover the basics of working with ArcPad and GPSCorrect on a Trimble GPS device – how to transfer your data to/from ArcGIS and ArcPad, collecting points, lines, and polygons, and how to post-process the data back in the office.  You will need to bring your GPS unit.

Integration of GIS & GPS Courses

Integrating GPS Data into a GIS

Using the right tools, your GIS benefits from the knowledge of your field-workers. Working with Data Dictionaries

Topics include:  defining features, defining attributes, creating drop-down menus, setting default values, limiting access to attributes, creating a data dictionary from an existing shapefile, transferring data dictionaries to a GPS device, and sharing data dictionaries.  We will also look at how the data dictionary affects the exporting of data. This is a ½ day class that requires an understanding of the TerraSync/Pathfinder Office workflow. You will need a computer with GPS Pathfinder Office loaded.  Price: $395 per person.

How do I program my RTK GPS receiver to automatically log data?

Answer

The Configuration ToolBox software lets you load a configuration to a survey-grade Trimble GPS receiver connected to your desktop or laptop computer running Windows operating system. Use the Configuration Toolbox software to create a custom application that can be uploaded.

With the RTK receiver connected to your computer via comm. Port run the configuration toolbox.

File New

For most applications you want to set the File to be Stored in receiver as an auto power up file

Then choose any Available configurations and when ready transmit to receiver.

To clear configuration files do a reset on the reciver by pushing green button down for 30 seconds.

2. From the main menu, select Register your receiver.

3. Do one of the following:

– To register online, select Register using the Internet. The

online registration form opens in your default web browser.

Fill in the required fields, and then click Submit to submit

the completed form.

Few months ago a client had to locate some obnoxious weeds and was setting up the base & rover on an RTK system to do it. This is the only mapping system they have & must do both survey and mapping for the department. The question was “ It there a quicker way to do this with less trouble than doing an RTK survey for mapping project that only require sub-meter?

Answer is yes!  

WAAS is a free correction from a geo-stationary satellite. It provides a good solid sub-meter DGPS position & works especially good in Arizona. So if you have some mapping to do where you only need sub-meter accuracy creating a “WAAS” survey style will simplify the job and increase your productively. This works with any newer Trimble RTK system.  Here’s how . . .

1.        From the Main menu in Survey Controller go to Configuration ~ Survey Styles ~ New ~ Style Name: WAAS Style type: GPS

2.         Edit Rover Options ~ Survey Type: RT differential ~ Broadcast format: WAAS

3.        Accept ~ Store  And that’s it.

4.        Go start a “WAAS” survey connected to your RTK Receiver. It takes a while for the DGPS WAAS signal to come in but once you see a little satellite where you normally see the radio you got it & are getting sub-meter results with out a local base.
