Trimble's Connected Site
 
In the February newsletter we introduced Trimble's Connected Site. Following is an overview of the Connected Site and its implementation.

Trimble's Connected Site is structured on four principles: Building Partnerships, Innovative Products, Scalable Solutions and Training and Support. Through partnering with your business Trimble uncovers the needs and requirements of the industry. Utilizing this information products are designed offering the latest positioning technology and streamlined workflows. These products, from mechanical total stations, to GPS, to spatial scanning, can be utilized standalone or integrated with a suite of products to complete the most complex projects. To ensure maximum productivity online training courses, recorded and live webcasts, can be scheduled through Trimble Knowledge Network. Trimble Assistant allows support personnel direct access to hardware and software in the field to assess and correct issues.
The Connected Site provides compatibility across Trimble's market segments which include solutions for Survey, Construction, GIS, Spatial and Infrastructure (VRS). The backbone of the Connected Site is Trimble's Connected Community, a Web-based set of networking tools which enables all parties working on a project to share a wide range of information immediately throughout the project life cycle.

This approach enables surveyors to choose from a broad range of options in one fully integrated and interoperable surveying solution. Surveyors benefit from complete data compatibility with all Trimble field and office software; increased flexibility to use the best tools and techniques for each job; the adaptation of specialized technologies to fit their workflow; and the localization of surveying solutions to address specific existing or new market needs.

By integrating processes and building a connected site, engineers, surveyors and construction professionals can identify new growth opportunities, find ways to save money, constantly improve operations and ultimately, transform the way work is done.

Survey Controller V12.43 
 
TSC2Trimble has released Survey Controller V12.43 for the TSC2 and Trimble CU (TCU) Controllers. This version offers a number of enhancements, specifically for use with the receiver firmware V4.00 (L5 Support, Galileo Support, CMRx Support, etc.), and known issue fixes.

This month Mike will review how to create a sub-grid of the Geoid Model.  
 
Geoid Sub-Grid File Creation
 
Creating geoid sub-grids (a smaller version of the Geoid Continental United States model covering a particular area) is a procedure customers ask about quite frequently. The entire Geoid03US model is 28MB, whereas a sub-grid (Southern California) is approximately 840kb. This document is for Trimble Geomatics Office/Survey Controller users and assumes you are running TGO v1.63.
 
STEP 1: Create a sub-grid with Trimble Grid Factory
 
In this example, we will create a sub-grid for California. Open TGO and go to Utilities/Grid Factory. The Open Grid File window will appear. Click on G03US.ggf and then Open. You will see the United States surrounded by a blue rectangle.
 
Click on the magnifying glass , then zoom on California to bring the state closer to view. Next, click on the Sub-grid selection pointer  and, while holding down the left mouse button, drag a square around the state. 
 
Click on the Save Sub-Grid button . The Save Sub-Grid to File window appears. In this example we will enter G03CA and choose Save. A Grid Description box appears next. Enter G03CA then OK. Close Grid Factory.
 
STEP 2: Add the new Sub-Grid to Coordinate System Manager (CSM)
 
With TGO still open, go to Utilities/Coordinate System Manager. Once CSM opens, click on the Geoid Models tab. 
 
Right-click anywhere on the white background. Choose Add New Model. The following window appears. 
 
Enter G03CA for the Name. In the File name field, choose G03CA.ggf from the pull down arrow. Click OK. You will now see a blue "blob" named G03CA.  
 
Choose File/Save. Then File/Exit. Congratulations! You have just created and saved a geoid sub-grid. 
 
STEP 3: Transfer the sub-grid to Survey Controller on a TSCe/TSC2 Data Collector
 
Connect your data collector via Active Sync. In TGO, go to Utilities/Data Transfer. Click the Send tab, then Add. Change Objects of Type to Geoid Grid. In the Look In pull down, go to the following folder: C:/Program Files/Common Files/Trimble/Geodata. Choose G03CA.ggf and Select. 
 
Click on Transfer All
