Trimble opened its Dimensions 2009 conference on Monday with more than 2,400 registered attendees from 67 countries around the world. The conference theme -- Positioning for Success Today and Tomorrow -- provided insight into how surveying, engineering, construction, mapping, Geographic Information System (GIS), geospatial and mobile resource management professionals worldwide can harness the power of today's technology to help face tomorrow's challenges. Attendees had the opportunity to network with key industry leaders, develop new contacts, build partnerships, discuss opportunities and discover how to overcome obstacles in today's competitive business environment. With more than 300 sessions across multiple specialty tracks, the conference focused on increasing productivity in the field and the office to transform the way work is done.
A range of new products were introduced over the course of the conference. New Survey releases to note are the R8 GNSS Model 3 Receiver and Trimble's Access software. The features of each product add to the suite of tools which compose Trimble's Connected Site. The concept and tools of Trimble's Connected Site will be explored in following newsletters. Looking at each individual "piece" it's difficult to see how each fits with the next. We will help broaden the view for a better overall picture.

| R8 GNSS Model 3 |
The latest advancements in Trimble R-Track technology consistently deliver precise positioning performance in the most challenging GNSS conditions. More satellites and better reception keep you working throughout the day. Our latest advancement, Trimble R-Track with Signal Prediction™ is a giant step for the surveying industry. Signal Prediction compensates for intermittent RTK signals, enabling extended operation after an interruption.
The new, CMRx protocol provides maximum compression of corrections to optimize communications bandwidth and fully utilize all of the satellites and signals in view.
The Trimble R8 GNSS supports a wide range of satellite signals, including GPS L2C and L5 and GLONASS L1/L2 signals. In addition, Trimble is committed to the next generation of modernized GNSS configurations by providing Galileo-compatible products available for customers well in advance of Galileo system availability In support of this plan, the new Trimble R8 GNSS is capable of tracking the experimental GIOVE-A and GIOVE-B test satellites for signal evaluation and test purposes.

| Trimble Access |
Trimble's Survey Division is excited to introduce a fresh, new field and office productivity solution for surveyors: Trimble Access software is a field and office solution that improves collaboration and control for surveying teams through constant connectivity -a first for the surveying community.
Streamlined workflows With Trimble Access, you can access powerful and familiar surveying tools for typical work such as topographic surveys, staking, or control. In addition, you can select from several streamlined workflows for specialized applications, such as road surveying and tunneling. Each of these workflows is designed to simplify a specific type of project for reduced learning curves and improved efficiencies in the field. Streamlined workflows for specialized applications are available separately, so you can expand your system capabilities as you take on new projects.
Roads and Tunnels are two streamlined workflow applications available today.

| Trimble Business Center V2.0 Upgrade |
Trimble Business Center now supports optical surveying data, giving users the power to process all of their Integrated Surveying projects. Now it's easier than ever to accelerate your business with the power of the Connected Site:
- Total station, GNSS and level data can be combined in one place
- Automated Feature Coding generates detailed point and line information
- Data download is streamlined
Trimble Business Center 2.0 lets users easily combine and manage data from multiple sources to generate accurate, integrated survey results. With all their information in one place, you can be confident in the data quality and accuracy. And no matter which Trimble Integrated Surveying instruments are used, the workflow remains the same.
Trimble Business Center is still offered as a modular system, so when working with L1 GPS data only customers can select a simple module without the need to set dual-frequency controls. When extra capacity is needed, upgrading to full GNSS, optical and digital level processing and network adjustment is simple.

This month we will review a common issue: reduced radio range.
The factory specified range for the 25 and 35 Watt radio is +/- 6 miles. This range can be affected by a number of sources such as terrain, obstructions, other transmissions, etc. However if you are operating in an open area and notice a dramatically reduced radio range it is recommended to have your radio and antenna set metered.
The components required for service are the antenna set and the radio. The antenna set consists of the radio antenna cable with mount, the spring mount and the antenna. Over time these items can become "detuned" which has a direct impact on the overall range and life of the radio. The radio is required in order to test the power output.
If you are experiencing this issue get the radio and antenna set tested immediately. Prolonged use of an underperforming antenna set may lead to a costly radio replacement. | |
